A movement is building across the country. Over 3 million Canadians have left a gift in their Will to charity. We’re not talking about celebrities or wealthy philanthropists, these are ordinary people who are using the power of their Wills to make a big difference.

Joan Alston-Stewart, TLC legacy donor

Joan moved to the Blenkinsop Valley as a young girl where she developed a love of gardening and landscape design from her father, Ed Lohbrunner. In the years prior to her passing, Joan met with TLC staff and board to discuss her wish to see the lands she and her husband, Gordon, had called home for decades permanently protected to support birds and other wildlife.

In her Will, Joan left three properties, totaling over 8 acres, to TLC. These rare urban greenspaces are located along the Lochside Trail, near Blenkinsop Lake. In addition, Joan left funds to support her beloved properties and TLC’s historic Abkhazi Garden. Joan’s visionary legacy will live on through her generosity and love of the natural world.

This trend in “ethical Wills” has surged in the past three years, and it’s no surprise. With so much change in the world highlighting new and growing needs, people are looking for effective ways to make a big impact.

Have you thought of including TLC in your Will?

I wanted to let you know about this trend, because it really is an all-around win. Here’s why:
● You can make a major contribution to TLC
● You won’t use any of the money you need now
● You’ll still support your loved ones

As you may know, we’ve partnered with Will Power, a national campaign that educates Canadians about the power of leaving a charitable gift in their Will. They have a great tool to show you how big an impact you can make…

The Will Power Legacy Calculator lets you see for yourself what even 1% of your estate can do. I tried it and was surprised to see I could leave a significant gift for B.C.’s critical ecosystems and habitats and still leave a legacy to my kids!

We all want to help where we can, and make our mark in the world. This movement is about finding a way to do that, while still protecting your finances and family’s future.

Please be in touch if you have any questions, and keep a look out for upcoming emails featuring some practical estate planning tips and free offers! If you have already included TLC in your Will, we would love to know! Please consider reaching out.

All my best,
