Exciting news from one of TLC’s newest projects, the Millstream Creek Watershed. The 27-acre Coastal Douglas-fir ecosystem property in the District of Highlands on southern Vancouver Island, was successfully protected this winter after astounding member and donor support.
In partnership with the Goldstream Salmon Hatchery, Peninsula Streams Society, Tsartlip First Nation, and Greater Victoria Greenbelt Society, we released 2,500 pre-smolt coho salmon into the watershed. The release into Earsman Creek and Mary Lake provides a relative refuge from the high flows further downstream and the inter- and intra-specific competition in the spring for food resources. Salmon return will depend on their success in outmigration, ocean survival, and return migration, however, jacks (two year old males) could return as early as late October 2021 and full grown females and males could return in the fall of 2022.
