BRIONY PENN ENDOWMENT FUND CREATED TO SUPPORT NATURALIST EDUCATION
The Land Conservancy creates legacy held with the Victoria Foundation
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 21, 2019
Victoria, B.C. – The Land Conservancy of British Columbia (TLC) is pleased to announce the Briony Penn Endowment Fund to support naturalist education. To recognize Briony Penn for more than 20 years of contributions to the conservation movement, TLC’s Board of Directors have created an endowment fund in her name at the Victoria Foundation to support educational programming by TLC.
Briony Penn is a writer, researcher, broadcaster, journalist, lecturer, artist, and a founding member of TLC. She has worked as a consultant to land trusts for biological inventory, communications, and environmental education, including eight years with the National Trusts in Britain. Briony developed legislation for B.C. land trusts and earned her PhD in Geography on land conservation. She has made contributions to the conservation movement as a member of The Land Trust Alliance, Raincoast Conservation Foundation, Salt Spring Island Conservancy, Child and Nature Alliance, and the Sustainable Energy Association of B.C.
“While she will remain a teacher with TLC’s Deertrails Naturalist Program and an active TLC Member, she has completed her volunteer terms on TLC’s Board,” said Cathy Armstrong, TLC Executive Director. “Given all that she has contributed to the conservation movement, the Board and I wanted to see her honoured and thanked in a special way.”
The fund has been launched with a personal donation of $20,000 from Frances Sloan Sainas, TLC Board Chair. As Briony completes her final term on TLC’s Board of Directors this month, Frances wishes to encourage others to join her in donating to the Briony Penn Endowment Fund.
“As is true for so many, I’ve been inspired by her commitment to the conservation movement. I hope others will join me in thanking her for her contributions,” said Frances Sloan Sainas, TLC Board Chair.
Donors can contribute to the Briony Penn Endowment Fund by calling TLC at 1-877-485-2422 or donating online at www.conservancy.bc.ca or directly to the Victoria Foundation at www.VictoriaFoundation.bc.ca. Gifts are eligible for charitable tax receipts.
