Farewell to Tom and Jackie

Farewell to Tom Cho and Jackie Wykes, who on April 6 moved on to a three-month residency in picturesque Blairmore, Alberta. They take up residence in the former studio of the photographer Thomas Gushul, in a competitive residency supporting both writers and visual artists through the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Lethbridge.

Tom and Jackie are artists for us as well as writers, it seems to me. During their seven months with us at Historic Joy Kogawa House, they used their design skills to rebuild the look and feel of the www.kogawahouse.com website. At the same time Tom wrote and published “Are You There, God? It Is I, Robot,” in Prism international’s Spring Issue 54.3, and with Jackie hosted writers Sunday afternoons in Shut Up and Write sessions.

Our New Writer-in-Residence

Historic Joy Kogawa House now hosts a new writer-in-residence, Alexandra Bischoff. A visual artist equally invested in text, Alexandra has embarked on a conversation with Vancouver’s visual arts and literary communities about the current affordability crisis towards a publication cataloguing the recent onslaught of heritage home demolitions. Alexandra invites proposals for submissions from writers and visual artists by Friday, May 5. For more information, visit the submissions section here.

Welcome, Alexandra!

Writing Sessions Continue

Shut Up and Write sessions continue Wednesdays, 2:00 to 5:00pm, at Artigiano on Main. A shout out to Holly Flauto Salmon, Julie Burtinshaw, Jane Eaton Hamilton, and other writers who have kept these sessions going.
