Sandwick Forest

Sandwick Forest 2017-11-19T20:08:24+00:00

12.6 hectares in Courtenay
Covenanted in 2004

This covenanted land contains second growth forest verging on Older Second Growth Forest, at least one stand of Older Forest, and Riparian and Wetland ecosystems. These four ecosystem types are described by the Sensitive Ecosystem Inventory for East Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. The main tree species are Western Red Cedar, Red Alder, Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce, Western Hemlock and Bigleaf Maple. The forest is interspersed with pockets of wetland and intersected by Watercourses that are tributaries of Portuguese Creek (the upper tributaries of Portuguese Creek are locally called Finlay Creek). The forest buffers and enhances the sensitive wetland and riparian areas. The land contributes to landscape connectivity and the provision of corridors for wildlife. By protecting the land in its Natural State, the second growth forest will provide old forests for the future.
